Update for 2015: details of the Short Story competition are out!

Polish up those pens, limber up those typing fingertips, it's time to think about short stories again! The 2015 NZSA Central Districts Branch 2015 short story competition opens 1 August and closes 2 October. So get writing, editing, polishing - no procrastinating!

Competition Rules

NZ Society of Authors Central Districts Branch
SHORT  STORY  COMPETITION  2014
Conditions of entry:
  1. The Open Category will be judged by Joan Rosier-Jones. The Student Category will be judged by Christine Leunens. The Intermediate Age Category will be judged by Sue McCauley.
  2. Open Category: First prize $400, second prize $200, third prize $100. Student Category: First prize $200, second prize $100, third prize $50.  Intermediate Age Category: First prize $125, second prize $75, third prize $50.
  3. Open Category entries must be between 1000 and 3000 words long. Secondary Student Category entries must be between 400 and 1500 words long. Intermediate Category: 250 to 750 words.
  4. Entrants in all categories must be normally resident within the Central Districts Branch (NZSA) region. i.e., Central Plateau, East Coast/Poverty Bay, Hawke’s Bay, Horowhenua, Manawatu, Taranaki, Wairarapa, Whanganui.
  5. Entrants in the Student Category should be secondary school (or equivalently home-schooled) students, in Years 9-13.  Entrants in the Intermediate Age Category should be in Years 7-8.
  6. Entry fees are, for each entry: Open Category $10; Student Category $5; Intermediate Age Category $2. Multiple entries will be accepted (full fee for each entry), but each must be accompanied with a separate completed entry form. Cheques should be made out to: Pen Central Districts Branch. Payments can be made online to this address at BNZ: 02-0630-0089062-000, with payer’s surname, ref ‘SSCOMP’, and code indicating category: ‘OPEN’, ‘STUDENT’, or ‘INTERMEDIATE’.
  7. The competition opens on 1 August 2014, and the closing deadline is 5pm, 3 October 2014. Entries received after this time will be ineligible.
  8. Entries for all three categories should be sent by mail to: CD Short Story Competition, 8 York Place, Palmerston North 4412.
  9. Entries must be in English, typed, on A4 paper, one side only, one-and-a-half spaced, with wide margins. The story title and page number should appear on each page, but not the writer’s name. The writer’s name and contact address should appear only on a copy of this entry form, which must be included with each entry as a cover sheet.
  10. Stories should not have been previously published, or broadcast, or be currently entered in any other competition.
  11. Results will be announced near the end of November 2014, and will be published on the NZSA website. All winners (and writers of short-listed entries) will be notified by postal mail or email. The judges’ reports will be available on the NZSA Central District Branch’s facebook page and blogspot. Entries
    will not be returned unless they were accompanied with a stamped, addressed envelope.
  12. The judges’ decisions will be final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
